Pretend, for a moment, that you are an avid reader as many around you are. You\u2019ve just finished the last 14000 word steampunk novella you\u2019ve been reading for a week, and your stock of fresh DiscWorld <\/em>books is slowly going dry. \u201cWhere?\u201d you sob, clutching a pillow. \u201cOh, where<\/em> will I find my next piece of Gothic literature with a healthy dose of dark humour?\u201d<\/p>\n Well, fear not, dear reader, for I might have the answer to your oddly specific request: Lemony Snicket\u2019s <\/em>\u2018A Series of Unfortunate Events\u2019.<\/p>\n This series (spanning thirteen books<\/em> in total) starts its story in a very standard way; the three Baudelaire siblings, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, are walking along the beach. They\u2019re having fun, skipping rocks, until they find out that they have lost their parents and most of their belongings in a terrible fire. They are then put in the custody of their (geographically) closest relative, Count Olaf (cue ominous music). Violet (the inventive oldest sibling), Klaus (the bookworm), and Sunny (the infant with\u2026very sharp teeth) don\u2019t take long to realize that Count Olaf isn\u2019t really the coolest dude on the block. After a scheme involving trying to force Violet to marry him to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune fails, the Baudelaire orphans are whisked away to a new relative. Excluding the marriage, that last sentence describes all the individual books of the first half of the series.<\/p>\n The setting of the books is a huge plus, with the characters and locations adding personality to a plot which would otherwise probably be quite uninteresting. You\u2019ll definitely fall in love with this book series for the characters. All of them are fleshed-out very well, and their individual personalities interacting with each other make for some pretty hilarious as well as terrifying scenes. The locations in which the different books take place, specifically the great variety in them, are also very fun. For example, you\u2019ve got a creepy boarding school in which human rights seem to be a distant idea, a creepy hospital in which human rights seem to be a distant idea, a creepy carnival in which\u2026okay, maybe I exaggerated on the variety.<\/p>\n In all honest, although the series is officially filed under children\u2019s literature, it\u2019s overflowing with references to classic literature and poetry, ranging from outright quotation to more subtle ones, such as the name of the character \u2018Esm\u00e9 Squalor\u2019, a reference to J.D. Salinger\u2019s short story \u201cFor Esm\u00e9 \u2013 with Love and Squalor\u201d. If you don\u2019t want to read a few thousand pages, you can also wait until the end of this year, when a mini-series based on the books will be available on Netflix!
